Like every business, nonprofit organization, and household in this community, Summit Academy has been impacted by COVID-19. However, even during these unprecedented times, we remain committed to our mission of providing a transformative educational experience for students who learn differently.
Summit Academy launched remote learning for all students on March 16, 2020. It has been a new challenge, but our faculty and staff have worked diligently to come up with innovative new approaches, activities and lesson plans in order to continue educating our students while providing them a sense of normalcy and stability. We continue to operate in this fashion today and currently plan to do so at least through the end of the school year.
Our remote learning plan centers around an online, synchronized learning format. This approach utilizes our extensive access to the Google for Education suite, including Google Classroom and Google Meet in order to have face-to-face instruction. While highly modified, the schedule for each day closely mirrors a typical school day for students at Summit Academy – math and literacy instruction in the morning and science, social studies, and special areas in the afternoon.
Our goal in this effort is to provide our teachers the opportunity to more actively facilitate the learning of their students and to provide direct instruction, albeit in an unconventional way. It is also an outlet for students to connect with their peers, an important factor when the current circumstances can create feelings of isolation.
Some things are certainly different at Summit Academy these days. The hallways are dark, the lunchroom is quiet, and after school clubs have ceased meeting. However, some things have not changed. Our highly-qualified, passionate teachers are using online resources to continue working directly with their students and provide them with face-to-face instruction. Our talented administrative team continues to lend support where needed while planning for the long-term stability of the school. Our amazing students and families have responded with grace and creativity. Together, we are working through these challenging times and preparing for a bright and successful future.
